Organizations We Fund
Amar Shahid Chetana Sansthan (ASCS): ASCS is located in Madhuban, in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. Founded in 1989, it is a small grassroots development organization which emphasises the empowerment of women through income generation projects. ASCS is also the site of a special community centre, whose construction was funded by World Literacy of Canada, and which serves as a centre for literacy and community development in Madhuban.
Grameen Vikas Sansthan (GVS): GVS is located in Hathini in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. One of World Literacy of Canada’s oldest partners, it was founded in 1991 and has been a partner of World Literacy of Canada since 1994. GVS is a community development organization focussed on literacy and women’s empowerment which has achieved consistently impressive results throughout the 12 years of our partnership.
Sri Sachchidanand Siksan Sansthan (SSSS): located in Chandupura, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, SSSS is a small grassroots organization in a rural community which employs a dedicated local staff. It was founded in 1984, and over the years has become a strong organization committed to providing vocational training, education, family welfare, and water and sanitation services to the community it serves.
Tagore Bal Niketan Avam Balbari Kendra (TBN): TBN was founded in 1984 and is now in its 10th year of partnership with World Literacy of Canada. TBN is located in the village of Gajia Tola, and serves the rural Mirazapur district of Uttar Pradesh. TBN promotes and provides primary schooling, family counselling, health education and legal aid.
Champa Devi Nari Vikas Sansthan (CDNVS): CDNVS is a small but strong NGO working in the Gorakpur distrit of Uttar Pradesh since 1990, and became a partner of World Literacy of Canada in 2003. This primarily female-run organization is committed to empowering the poor, and currently delivers vocational training, health education and environmental awareness programs in addition to the World Literacy of Canada literacy initiatives.
Purti Sansthan (PS): PS is located in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh and has been a partner of World Literacy of Canada since 2003. The organization is particularly concerned with issues of caste-based inequality, and provides primarily low caste beneficiaries with training, health and education as well as promoting advocacy to local government as a strategy for change and empowerment.
Child and Women Welfare Associates (CWWA): CWWA is located in the Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh, and area which has for centuries been the centre of Northern India’s handmade carpet trade. The organization was founded in 1994 at a time of great change for Bhadohi: child labour in the carpet industry was being banned, which brought on major social and economic upheaval. CWWA established itself to promote the rights and empowerment of children and women, and to provide education and new economic opportunities to the communities in Bhadohi. Their partnership with World Literacy of Canada since 2003 has allowed them to place increasing emphasis on education and literacy programming.
Nari Bikash Sangh (NBS): NBS is located in Nepal, in the rural southeastern area of the country, about 500 km from the capital city of Kathmandu, and is the only Nepalese NGO which World Literacy of Canada funds. Founded in 1980 as a women’s empowerment agency, this impressive, entirely female – run and –staffed NGO has been a partner of World Literacy of Canada for 12 years now. Today, NBS works in 12 rural districts of Nepal to bring education, health and advocacy services to women in need.
