Children's Program
The state of public education in India is in crisis and many of the communities where we work do not have adequate primary schools. In addition to ongoing pressure to improve the public school system, the World Literacy of Canada program provides children with modest access to daily learning, either to compliment their existing schooling or in its absence or as a measure to prepare them for formal schooling.
Early child hood development, better parenting and child education are the major components of World Literacy of Canada children’s program. Each of our literacy centers holds two hour daily classes for young children who are not enrolled in school. World Literacy of Canada’s teacher and partner’s staff work with the children and their parents to encourage and prepare kids for a regular school system. Ideally, children are encouraged to apply for admission in to some of Varanasi’s better schools: these have costly fees, but World Literacy of Canada provides scholarships to those children from our programming who do gain admission, and supports them with tutoring throughout their education. Throughout all of our children’s programming, a special emphasis is placed on promoting girl child education.
In addition to this programming, since 1998, World Literacy of Canada has operated a special program for children in the Assi Ghat neighbourhood where our India office is located. Originally called the Ganga Mahal Children’s Program because it operated in the Ganga Mahal (the building which houses our offices), it moved to a bright, beautiful and spacious new building called Tulsi Kunj this year, and is now renamed the Tulsi Kunj Tutorial Program. The TKTP provides preschool literacy classes and after school tutoring to children, as well as scholarships, educational field trips, and special fun programs to children in need from age 4 to 18, and 105 children are now enrolled. This special program allows World Literacy of Canada to form deep connections to the neighbourhood in which we operate our office.
