Outline

October 2nd is the birthday of one of the world’s great philosophical leaders and one of the founders of an independent India, Mahatma Gandhi. World Literacy of Canada, in collaboration with several public schools in the Greater Toronto Area, will use the theme Our Community: A Celebration of Non Violence to commemorate this day with over 800 students. The day will be comprised of activities aimed to encourage candid discussion amongst students, teachers, families and community members about peace and non-violence in their communities.

Students will participate in activities such as:

•    An art activity to decorate Gandhi Super Hero T-Shirts with slogans and drawings to express ideas about non violence;
•    A public speaking exercise to discuss current events having to do with peace and violence within their community based on information found in local media;
•    The development of short skits about peace and violence by older students to act out for younger students;
•    The screening of the highly acclaimed film Lage Raho Munna Bhai and
•    A letter writing campaign.

Several special guests such as local artists and political figures will be invited to share the day with the students. Some of the participating schools are also planning to continue using the theme of ‘non-violence’ throughout the school year.

Goals of the Gandhi Day Project

•    To actively engage students in discussion about non violence using Gandhian principals as a framework
•    To help students have their voices heard by mainstream politicians, media and local leaders to catalyze positive change in their community
•    To encourage students to think about how individuals can create peace in their homes, schools and, communities, both nationally and internationally.
