Our primary healthcare and education program is fully integrated with our literacy programming. This means that, as women learn to read, write and advocate for themselves, they also gain the tools to keep their families healthy.
Our trained community health teams refer patients to hospitals, distribute iron and other supplements, develop materials and seminars on major health topics; and provide eye exams, reading glasses, and cataract surgery.
At a glance: the Health program, 2007-2012:
- Over 37 000 women and girls attended community health workshops, on malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and preventable diseases.
- 12 000 mahila mandal (women’s group) members, participated in, and promoted our health campaigns in their communities.
- 2200 men and women were tested and prescribed eyeglasses.
- 260 successful cataract surgeries were performed
