WLC strives to ensure women can access government services if they are illiterate. Through its networking and linkage initiative, WLC staff encouraged and motivated the serving communities, particularly the members of Mahila Mandals (women’s groups), to access the benefits of government welfare schemes for themselves as well as for their communities.
Many services are out of reach for people who cannot read or write because they cannot fill out application forms or read documents which list their eligibility for assistance.
The government services that WLC helped women receive include: old age pension, widow pension, support through the safe motherhood incentive, the rural housing scheme, and the rural home toilet scheme. WLC also assisted young girls applying to government scholarships for further education when they graduate Grade 12.
