Kayla Borecky's Story

He covered his airship with leaves and vines and slowly made his way towards the village. A little head poked out of one of the huts. The person was a girl dressed in skins and wooden jewelry. As Matt started to say something the girl quickly ran back into the hut. She soon appeared again, but with an elderly man.

The man looked at Matt with squinted eyes and said “Uga ee hoo!”, waving to Matt to follow him. As Matt nodded he began to see other villagers coming out of their huts. Matt was welcomed and given a hut to stay in. Little by little he learned the new language but never forgot about his airship. He knew when it would be the right time to ask the villagers if they could help him fix it. The villagers still weren’t sure about Matt.

One night a horrible scream awoke Matt and he quickly raced into the forest. He found the little girl holding onto a tree with a leopard tugging at her dress. Matt thought fast and picked up a rock which he slammed into the leopard. The leopard lay dead, sprawled on the ground. The girl jumped up and yelled “Oona, oona!” which meant “Hooray, hooray!” The next morning when Matt crawled out of his hut a huge ceremony was held for him and he was made an official member of the tribe. Now, the villagers believed in Matt. Then Matt knew it was the right time to ask for help in repairing his airship. He talked quickly and the villagers said that they would do anything for him, and got to work. They worked all night and into the next morning. Finally, his airship was ready. Matt said “Aloka!”, meaning “Good bye!”, as his airship vanished into the clouds.
