Library Programs
In addition to training and mentoring library instructors, WLC created the first-ever central library at Tulsi Kunj in Varanasi that serves the city’s poor.
Elsewhere, we have established numerous gumptis – small, volunteer-run library stalls in slums and villages that are open a few hours each day – that enable newly literate community members to freely borrow books and other relevant reading material to help them retain their literacy skills.
WLC also operates a mobile library: a van that brings books, magazines, newspapers, and other literacy materials to adults and children in the remote areas of Varanasi that we serve. As part of the mobile library, we create activities that develop artistic and performance skills, and provide information about relevant issues and resources to apply for government programs.
