Advocacy
Through our women’s groups, WLC assists women in discussing issues affecting their local community; provides information and resources about human rights and how to access government services; encourages women to get involved in local government and to run in elections; and offers guidance about how to achieve positive change in their homes.
We also empower women through several community-wide festivals and awareness days:
• A large-scale Kabbadi tournament in Varanasi on International Women’s Day (March 8). Kabaddi is a male-only Indian sport whose popular rivals that of ice-hockey in Canada. In the month leading up to March 8, women from WLC project areas train and take part in practice matches.
• A gathering on International Literacy Day (September 8), when women from various communities come together to celebrate their literacy and recognize one another’s accomplishments.
• A Children’s Day celebration, when children join together for a day of games, treats, and festivities.
