Storytelling Project

The Storytelling Project emerged out of an ongoing storytelling initiative that World Literacy of Canada has offered in partnership with Rose Avenue Public School since 2004. The project was designed to help promote family literacy and build a sense of community spirit around the issues of literacy and education.  It gave rise to the annual St. James Town Storytelling Festival, a colourful celebration featuring cultural music and displays, professional storytellers and food alongside the bright young storytellers from Rose Avenue School.

With generous support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, World Literacy of Canada was able to expand our storytelling initiative into three additional inner city school communities:  Winchester Public School, Nelson Mandela Park Public School and Baycrest Public School. Since September 2006, students, parents and teachers at all four schools have been engaged in learning about the magical art of storytelling, honing their own oral language skills and preparing for spring storytelling festivals in their communities.

As part of this project, World Literacy of Canada published an excellent resource book called Storytelling Soup.  This handy tool provides a comprehensive overview of the educational benefits of storytelling as well as a number of helpful hints for planning storytelling festivals in your own school or community. If you interested in purchasing this resource, please contact the World Literacy of Canada office.  We have a limited number of copies available for $10 each.  All proceeds are used directly to support the Storytelling Project.

Thank you to the following gracious supporters of the storytelling initiative:
